I bought my 1993 LS400 Savage in March and took the MSF class that week. The instructor mentioned the Air Force base here in Japan sells bad quality gas (87 octane) and recommened not to use it in motorcycles. In fact someone in the previous class had a 1988 LS650 and used the base gas and fouled the plug. (It hasn't started since and is now for sale $300 OBO!). I switched to off-base gas and now use Premium (98 Octane I think)even though it is four times the price of on-base gas. The most noticable difference it that the backfiring has dwindled down to only an almost inaudible little -poof- on cutoff.
